June 14, 2006

The Honourable Dalton McGuinty
Premier of Ontario
Room 281, Legislative Building
Queen’s Park
Toronto, ON   M7A 1A1

Dear Premier:

I want to take this opportunity to recognize the important and much needed decision your government recently made in support of the beleaguered forest products industry in this province. The decision to reduce delivered fibre costs to a more competitive level addresses one of the most important recommendations of the Minister’s Council on Forest Sector Competitiveness.  However, that support by itself only provides breathing room for the industry.

The industry will not survive in the long term when faced with the highest energy costs among competing jurisdictions in North America.  That is why many people impacted by this crisis were pleased when both yourself and Minister of Energy Donna Cansfield recently stated that regional hydro pricing was being considered. The “energy island” reality of a vast portion of Northern Ontario is a justifiable reason for immediate and substantive action on this issue.  An immediate $15 per mwh reduction on purchased electricity retroactive to January 1 is needed, and should remain in place until $45 per mwh all inclusive cost of electricity is implemented.

Communities across Ontario who depend on the forest industry for their survival urge you and your government to provide relief from our energy crisis.

Please act now before it’s too late for our jobs … too late for our community.

Mr. Premier  -   KEEP PEOPLE WORKING.

Yours truly,
